The Community Business Patchwork is a network run by and for community-led businesses in the UK. It focusses on practical peer led support. The group was initiated in March 2020 by Bob Thust, treasurer for , who realised that the early impact of Covid-19 left many community businesses having to quickly change the focus of their operations to serve the communities they lie at the heart of. This sudden change in operations required many CB leaders to learn new skills, source and use unfamiliar tech platforms, employ new health and safety regulations, furlough staff when they actually needed more people to help, all whilst adjusting the new normal that had impacted their income and security. These CB leaders needed an opportunity to chat, offload and learn - both to be practically useful to their communities and to be emotionally supported to ensure that their community work could continue. They needed their tribe.
The first CB call was held on Tuesday 17th March, before the UK went into lockdown and was a small group of 12, which included , , in Hastings and others. Many were in chaotic surroundings, with an enormous amount to organise but all were able to give attention to the call - testament to the desire to find some solidarity in amongst the chaos. This call was arranged spontaneously in response to a real need from CB leaders.
